What is LOLER?

LOLER is an acronym of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, and in conjunction with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) sets out the minimum requirements for the examination / inspection of lifting equipment and related products.

Equipment covered by LOLER

The regulations cover a wide range of equipment used for the lifting and lowering, anchoring or supporting of loads in the workplace. Equipment covered by LOLER includes, cranes, hoists, forklift trucks, mobile elevating work platforms, vehicle inspection platform hoists, and lifting accessories (such as slings, shackles and eyebolts).

Who the Regulations apply to?

If you are an employer or a self-employed person providing lifting equipment for use at work, or you have control of the use of lifting equipment, then the regulations apply to you.

Who enforces the Regulations?

LOLER is enforced by the Health and Safety Executive. Failure to comply with the Regulations may result in financial and / or criminal penalty.
